The Autumn Term has been a fantastic start to the academic year at Laurus Ryecroft, with lots of exciting things going on! To end what has been a brilliant year, we have wrapped up some of the highlights from the past few months.
A brilliant start for Sixth Form students
September saw the much-anticipated opening of our new academic Sixth Form.
The term kicked off with an official opening event (which made the local news!), and since then, our students have been excelling:
- 41% of the year group have been accepted onto the University of Cambridge’s HE+ Programme
- 62% are completing the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
- 30% are enrolled on our Oxbridge and Competitive Entry Elective
- 27% are enrolled on our Medicine, Dentistry & Veterinary Science Elective
They’ve also enjoyed hearing from guest speakers through the Laurus Launchpad, including Managing Director, Jamie Boyd and Corporate Lawyer, Ryan Brown.
Most recently, the Student Cabinet were elected and already have some fantastic things planned for the new year. Make sure you’re following the Sixth Form Instagram to keep up to date with their plans.
After such a brilliant start, we’re excited to see what our Sixth Formers do next!
Students make an impact through Active Citizenship programme
Our Active Citizens have been incredibly busy this term, spreading joy by visiting local care homes, fundraising and more!
Care home residents have enjoyed performances from the Gospel Choir, Soul Band and Cheerleading team, and playing board games with students.
At the start of the month, active citizens spent an afternoon at Droylsden Tesco volunteering.
They were packing up food donations, taking food and monetary donations and leafleting on behalf of the Trussell Trust.
Thanks to their help, donations were given to the Droylsden and District Foodbank who distribute food parcels to families in the local community.
There are no words to express how proud we are of our active citizens, they have already made such a big impact on the community and have even more planned for the new year!
The BBC comes to Laurus Ryecroft!
In November, students in Years 9-11 had the opportunity to engage with industry professionals during the BBC’s nationwide schools tour!
They heard careers advice from a panel including tv production workers, radio presenters, and even the Director of Archie’s fast-food chain.
The visit aimed to inspire the students in their own Life after Laurus plans, and it certainly created a buzz amongst them!
Year 8 girls go Cyber
November also saw a group of Year 8 Computing students attend an exciting Cyber Girls event at UA92.
During their visit, they heard from guest speakers, enjoyed a variety of tech sessions and even flew drones!
The trip left them feeling inspired and empowered to consider future careers in Cyber and Technology.
Winter Wonderland gets everyone in the festive spirit
Last week, we were treated to an evening of outstanding musical performances in this year’s Winter Wonderland music concert.
The concert was a delightful event, with students showcasing their many talents and even getting the audience to join them in singing some festive favourites!
Well done to everyone who played a part in making the concert so special, we can’t wait to see their next performance in the new year.
And that’s a wrap!
We hope you enjoyed looking back at just some of the highlights from the first term of this academic year. From all of us at Laurus Ryecroft, we wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
